Brian Cashman and Kevin Towers were young general managers in 1998, when their teams met in the World Series.
“We knew each other extremely well and we both wanted to win,’’ Cashman said Tuesday. “The only team that could have beaten the Padres that year was one of the best of all time. They had an exceptional team.”
Towers, who died at 56 on Tuesday of thyroid cancer, was the GM in San Diego from 1995-2009 and had the same role from 2010-14 in Arizona. Between the two stints as GM, Towers worked as a special assignment scout for Cashman and the Yankees.
