Brett Gardner has hit the injured list.
The Yankees placed outfielder on the 10-day IL with knee inflammation prior to Thursday’s game in Boston, retroactive to July 22. They recalled relief pitcher Stephen Tarpley from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to fill his roster spot.
Gardner had been optimistic he could avoid a stint on the sidelines after injuring his knee while making a sliding catch against the Rockies on Saturday.
“It felt better today,” Gardner told reporters Wednesday. “I’m encouraged. I’m frustrated that it’s taken this long. But I’m hoping to be back in there (Thursday), when the rivalry is renewed at Fenway Park.
