Betances, Montgomery experiment is focus of Yankees whimper

TORONTO — The Yankees used Sunday’s game against the Blue Jays as a window to view what Jordan Montgomery and Dellin Betances could do in their first big-league games of the season.

Montgomery looked rusty, but Betances, who worked without his signature nuclear fastball but with a sharp breaking ball, struck out the two batters he faced looking.

Experimenting with Montgomery and Betances didn’t mean the Yankees weren’t trying to win because Gio Urshela was the only regular who sat to start the games.

But the three runs Montgomery gave up paired with the three Nestor Cortes Jr.
