Baseball great Joe Torre recounts father's abuse to Union City kids

UNION CITY — Major League Baseball executive and Hall of Fame inductee Joe Torre will never forget how his father, a New York City police officer, would abuse his mother Margaret.

"As a 9- or 10-year-old, I still remember him going to his drawer to get his revolver to threaten her," said Torre, 74.

He didn't realize until much later in life how much the abuse had affected him, he said, but by then he was ready to do something about it - and started his  Joe Torre Safe At Home Foundation.

Torre came to Union City's Emerson Middle School, which is a partner in his initiative, to talk about his interest in addressing domestic abuse, like he suffered, on Tuesday, April 14.
