August 23, 1996: Yankees defeat A’s 5-3

The Yankees snapped their mini two-game losing streak tonight, defeating the Oakland A’s by a score of 5-3.

Dwight Gooden got the start and tossed 5 innings of 2 run ball. He gave way to a trio of relievers who closed out the game, giving up just 1 run in 4 innings.

One of those relievers was Graeme Lloyd, who was acquired before the game from the Milwaukee Brewers. The Yankees shipped Gerald Williams and Bob Wickman to Milwaukee for the Australian lefty. New York also acquired injured shortstop Pat Listache in the deal.

The Yankees had a 4-0 lead after 3 innings, allowing them to relax.
