The Yankees are monitoring free-agent 40-homer slugger Chris Carter, according to ESPN.
The Yankees’ depth chart at first base currently features youngster Greg Bird, coming off major shoulder surgery, with backup from Tyler Austin or designated hitter Matt Holliday, who has limited experience at the position.
Carter, 30, hit 41 homers last season to tie Nolan Arenado for the National League lead. The right-hander also hit .222 with 206 strikeouts and bad defense at first. The Brewers non-tendered him rather than owe a projected $8 million in arbitration.
The money could be a sticking point.
