ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — After watching Gleyber Torres throw the ball from shortstop to first base on Saturday night with less velocity than usual, Aaron Boone left him out of Sunday’s lineup.
“Obviously with him getting hit with a pitch [Friday] night didn’t affect him swinging the bat. Felt like he was a little sore throwing the ball from shortstop,’’ Boone said of Torres, who went 2-for-4 in Saturday’s 7-2 loss to the Rays. “With the grind that shortstop can be I thought today was a good day [to give Torres off].’’
Thairo Estrada started at short for the second time this year and homered to open the ninth following a 43-minute delay due to the Tropicana Dome’s lights going out.
