Before Sunday’s game at Yankee Stadium, a parade of pinstriped alumni took the field for Old-Timers’ Day. By the end of the game, Yankees Manager Joe Girardi might have thought about recruiting a few of the retirees to bolster his drained team, which lost to the Texas Rangers, 7-6, for its 10th defeat in 12 games.
Girardi had only one bench player, Austin Romine, available at the start of the game because Starlin Castro and Matt Holliday, who were ailing, had to take the day off. By the start of the fifth inning, Romine was in the game, replacing Aaron Hicks, who had hurt his right oblique on a checked swing in the first inning.
