Aaron Hicks’ resurgence makes Ellsbury’s loss less painful

Aaron Hicks didn’t beat out Aaron Judge for the starting right field job in spring training, but the switch-hitting outfielder will receive regular work with center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury on the seven-day disabled list because of a concussion and a sprained neck.

Because Hicks has started 11 games in center this season and Brett Gardner hasn’t played the position, Hicks makes more sense than to shift Gardner to his old position.

“We have everyday players, whether it’s Gardy or Hicks, and I’m sure it’ll be Hicks that will be in center,’’ general manager Brian Cashman said Thursday at a HOPE Week event at Yankee Stadium after the Royals-Yankees game was rained out.
