BOSTON — The Yankees fired the first official salvo in the battle over the $6 million bonus in Alex Rodriguez’s contract when general manager Brian Cashman on Saturday said the team would “honor our responsibility of the contract. We have the right, but not the obligation, to do something.”
A day later, Rodriguez insisted he’s not worried about the outcome of the impending fight regarding whether he is owed the bonus tied to marketing for tying Willie Mays for fourth all-time on the home run list.
“Family business,” Rodriguez said before the Yankees finished off a sweep of the Red Sox with an 8-5 win at Fenway Park on Sunday night.
