With their first round pick (16th overall) in the 2015 amateur draft, the Yankees selected UCLA RHP James Kaprielian tonight. Here’s my profile. Slot money for the 16th overall pick is $2,543,300 and the signing deadline is Friday, July 17th.
More to come. Here’s my quick analysis: I would have preferred more upside, but Kaprielian is a fine pick at this slot. He is expected to be one of the quickest moving arms in the draft class and is a no-doubt starter with a deep repertoire and command. Also, scouting director Damon Oppenheimer drafted a Southern California pitcher in the early rounds.
