2 sweet: Yanks retire Jeter's iconic number

NEW YORK -- A star-studded group of invitees converged upon Yankee Stadium to pay tribute to Derek Jeter on Sunday night as the longtime Yankees captain took his rightful place in Monument Park with the retirement of his No. 2, the last of the team's single-digit uniform numbers.

A bronze plaque bearing Jeter's likeness was also unveiled as the five-time World Series champion became the 22nd player in franchise history to have his number retired, and the first since teammates Bernie Williams, Jorge Posada and Andy Pettitte during the 2015 season.

Jeter recently told Yankees Magazine that he specifically selected to have the ceremony on Mother's Day as a tribute to his mom, Dorothy.
