The MLB trade deadline on August 1st is rapidly approaching, and the trade rumors around the New York Yankees are starting to heat up. The Yankees are 52-48 and a strong start after the All-Star break has put them just four games back of the Wild Card. The Yankees have already dealt Aroldis Chapman for a solid return of prospects and might not be done making deals quite yet. With that in mind, here all the latest Yankees trade rumors you need to know.
Yankees Wanted Schwarber For Miller
Before the Yankees and Cubs agreed to the Chapman deal, the two sides discussed a trade for Andrew Miller. Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports the Yankees wanted injured Cubs outfielder Kyle Scwarber for Miller. The Yankees have coveted Schwarber, but he Cubs refused to give him up and the Yankees wouldn't budge either. The Cubs asked the Royals about Wade Davis, but the Royals wanted even more. That led the Yankees and Cubs to settle on the blockbuster Chapman trade.
New York Open To Dealing Ivan Nova?
The Yankees were pushing to trade starting pitcher Ivan Nova as of yesterday and the New York Post reports that the decision to keep Luis Severino on the major league roster is an indication Nova could be dealt.
With the Marlins and Rangers looking for pitching and the Yankees not averse to listening on Ivan Nova, the veteran right-hander could be dealt before Monday’s trade deadline. That would open a spot in the rotation for Severino.
Severino has just two career relief appearances, so he's an unlikely fit in the bullpen. Nova is 7-5 with a 4.65 ERA this year, but has pitched well in his last few starts. His next start is Friday
Could Yankees Be Buyers?
The Yankees have already traded Chapman, but the club is open to being buyers at the deadline.
"We're not playing in a narrow-minded world," GM Brian Cashman told Ken Rosenthal. "We want to be open to any and all ideas - buy, sell, long, short. It's in our best interests to be creative and open-minded, not just now."
Rosenthal hints that a controllable pitcher could be the Yankees' target, although he doesn't have any names in particular. The Yankees are over .500 and the Yankees could still try to push for a Wild Card spot.
