Believe it or not, the start of Spring Training is only a few days away for some teams. The New York Yankees report later this week, which means it's a great time for an update on the club. With that in mind, here are the latest Yankees news and rumors for Feb. 15th.
No Problems For Masahiro Tanaka
The Yankees' pitcher threw off the mound for the first time this spring Saturday. According to the New York Daily News, everything went well for Tanaka.
"Good, nice," pitching coach Larry Rothschild said. "Didn’t try to push it too much."
Rothschild was also asked if there was a sense of relief for Tanaka, who didn't speak to reporters after this session.
"I think from him, he kind of expects it," Rothschild said. "I don’t know — you’d have to talk to him — but it just looked like it was the routine, this is what I’m going to do and until he sees different, he’s going to keep progressing."
Tanaka has been the team's ace when healthy, but he's battled injuries throughout his time in New York. For more Yankees news, download the Chat Sports Android and iPhone app.
Michael Pineda Targeting 200 Innings
The Yankees starter has a specific goal this season for himself. He wants to top 200 innings pitched for the first time in his career.
"For me, this year, I'm coming here early to be strong and working hard to pitch 200 innings this year," Pineda told MLB.com. "I want to throw 200 innings this year. This is my goal, and help my team."
Pineda has never topped the 171 innings he put up in his 2011 rookie season with the Mariners. He's battled injuries, which is a big reason why he's never hit 200. Last year, Pineda was 12-10 with a 4.37 ERA in 160 2/3 innings.
