"I won't play after next year," Rodriguez told ESPN. "I've really enjoyed my time. For me, it is time for me to go home and be dad."
A-Rod's contract expires after the 2017 season, when he will be 42 years old. He will make $20 million in each of the last two seasons on his deal.
Rodriguez was suspended for the entire 2014 season for his involvement with performance enhancing drugs, something that has marred an otherwise spectacular career.
He is a three-time AL MVP (2003, 2005, 2007), 14-time All-Star, and won the World Series with the Yankees in 2009. He joined the 3,000 hit club last season and also ranks fourth in MLB history in career home runs (687). A-Rod needs 75 home runs over the next two years to tie Barry Bonds for most career homers.
Rodriguez is entering his 21st season in the league, spending time with the Seattle Mariners (1994-2000), Texas Rangers (2001-2003) and Yankees (2004-present). He hit .250 with 33 home runs and 86 RBI's last season.
