Alfonso Soriano was scratched from the Cubs lineup tonight because he is on the verge of being traded to the Yankees, Cubs manager Dale Sveum told Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune. Cubs beat writer Carrie Muskat of MLB.com is saying that Cubs president Theo Epstein told Sveum to remove Soriano from the lineup.
ESPN's Buster Olney is reporting that the Cubs would receive a lower-level pitching prospect from the Yankees, and that Chicago would eat most of his remaining salary.
If that sounds like a terrible deal for the Cubs, it's because it sort of is. But Soriano has a full no-trade clause and his also a 10-and-5 player on the Cubs. The Yankees are one of the few teams he will agree to go to, and the Cubs could use all the salary relief they could get.
Soriano broke into the league with the Yankees back in the early 2000s before being traded for Alex Rodriguez prior to the 2004 season. The 37 year-old has one more year after this on an 8-year, $136 million contract he signed back in 2007.
