Yankees rumors were dealt a tough blow on Monday, as new closer David Robertson was placed on the disabled list with a strained groin.
Wallace Matthews of ESPNNewYork.com believes that this injury could shed light on a New York Yankees franchise that attempted to "shore up sections of their aging roster [via free agency], only to find that the two areas that most needed shoring up have been the first to break down."
Along with slugger Mark Teixeira's thumb injury, two spots (closer and first base) that the New York Yankees seems relatively sure of coming into the season, now are left with "gaping holes" as Matthews puts it.
"This year, there is no Soriano on the roster as a safety net, only a handful of either suspect or unproven pitchers who probably have the ability to do the job on at least a short-term basis, but have yet to demonstrate whether they have the stomach for it over the long haul," Matthews writes, clearly unimpressed with some of the aspects of the NY Yankees' near half-billion spending spree this offseason.
As of now, it is up to the "suspect" and "unproven pitchers" on the Yankees staff to prove Matthews wrong.
