In Yankees rumors tonight , it looks as if the New York Yankees have another former Boston Red Sox reliever on their radar after signing former Red Sox closer Andrew Bailey to a minor-league contract a couple of days ago.
According to David Martino of the New York Daily News, the New York Yankees may be targeting former Boston Red Sox and Pittsburgh Pirates closer Joel Hanrahan during his rehabilitation from Tommy John surgery last year--"The Yankees also continue to monitor another former All-Star, Joel Hanrahan...If (David) Robertson is successful, a player like Hanrahan would probably serve as a setup man."
With the depth of the New York Yankees bullpen being called into question this offseason, the Yankees look to be in the mindset of signing injury-stalled former All-Star closers on the cheap, in order to potentially reap cost-effective benefits by the end of this season (or next.)
Hanrahan underwent Tommy John surgery on May 16th last season, effective short-circuiting his stay with the Boston Red Sox before it began.
Prior to that, however, Joel Hanrahan posted back-to-back All-Star seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2011-2012--saving 76 games while posting a stellar 2.26 ERA over that two-year span.
The New York Yankees, if this batch of Yankees rumors proves correct, could be counting on Joel Hanrahan to make a return to form as early as the middle of this season, if his rehabilitation remains on track.
