If you thought Yankees rumors were done in regards to free agency, think again. It looks as if the New York Yankees, who have already committed $465 million to players this season, are looking to spend more.
According to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, the Yankees are interested in pursuing free agent shortstop Stephen Drew, especially since the Yankees scratched Hal Steinbrenner's original plan of trying to stay underneath the $189 million luxury tax threshold after signing Japanese ace Masahiro Tanaka to a 7-year, $155 million deal earlier this week.
With questions regarding whether Derek Jeter will ever be back to playing at an all-star level after his recent injury, and with questions about the Yankees' lack of depth on the left side of the infield, signing Stephen Drew makes sense for a New York Yankees' organization who has already shown willingness to break the bank on free agents.
Last season, the oft-injured Drew played in over 86 games for the first times since 2010. In 124 regular season games, Drew hit .253 with 13 homers and 67 RBIs. Despite hitting just .111 in the postseason for the World Series-champion Boston Red Sox, Drew's defensive prowess would serve as a huge upgrade for the Yankees at shortstop.
