In Yankees rumors today, the New York Yankees are getting some love from an unexpected source for their work in free agency -- the Boston Globe.
Nick Cafardo of the Globe believes that Yankees general manager Brian Cashman "hasn’t missed" in regard to his half-billion dollar spending spree this offseason. However, Cafardo says there is a lot more work to do for the Yankees to turn it into a full-fledged success -- especially from a farm system perspective --
"The Red Sox’ farm system has caught up, but the Yankees’ still needs some work. In this offseason, the Red Sox had interest and/or made proposals on the same free agents as the Yankees. Brian McCann, Carlos Beltran, Masahiro Tanaka, and Jacoby Ellsbury were all on Boston’s radar, but after winning a World Series the Red Sox decided to stay with a cost-effective approach, settling for low-cost, short-term deals for A.J. Pierzynski and Grady Sizemore."
If the Yankees can balance their spending with solid growth from a farm system perspective, the Yankees may be able to withstand injuries such as the ones in their starting rotation over the long season ahead.
