The New York Yankees were unusually quiet during the Winter Meetings, but are now starting to make some moves. Here's the latest news and rumors surrounding the Yankees:
CHASE HEADLEY
The Yankees inked Headley to a four-year, $56 million on Monday morning, securing one of their top free agent targets. Headley joined New York in a midseason trade from the Padres, and put up a .262/.371/.398 line in 58 games with the Yankees. New York is hoping he can get back to his 2012 numbers, in which he batted .286/.376/.498 with 31 homers.
Perhaps most importantly for the Yankees, it gives them a good everyday third baseman, meaning they can put Alex Rodriguez in a DH/bench role.
MAX SCHERZER & JAMES SHIELDS
Headley's signing means that New York can now turn their attention to starting pitching, and Max Scherzer and James Shields are the best free agents available. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said that pitching is a top priority this offseason, which would indicate that a move is coming.
Both players are looking for big contracts and want to play for a contender, and New York can provide each of those things. There isn't a bidding war yet for either player, allowing the Yankees to take their time, but look for them to become aggressive in pursuing one of these pitchers soon.
OTHER NOTES
The Philadelphia Phillies have made pitcher Cole Hamels available, and he has also said he wants to pitch for a winner. If New York strikes out on both Scherzer and Shields, look for them to make a move for Hamels.
The Yankees have also shown some interest in middle infielder Asdrubal Cabrera, though it is not thought to be serious at this time.
New York has managed to keep all of their top prospects this offseason, which shows they're not splurging on risky free agents and building from within, writes Bill Madden of the New York Post.
