With the Tampa Bay Rays having signed Asdrubal Cabrera to a one-year deal, that takes one more potential second-base option for the New York Yankees off the market.
However, as Brandon Kuty of NJ.com points out, there are still plenty of other options to consider:
The Yankees are reportedly considering signing Cuban defector Hector Olivera. Rickie Weeks is still available. And so is Stephen Drew, who hit terribly for the Yankees last season but played solid defense. The Yankees also liked his willingness to put the team first and move from shortstop.
While Drew's hitting woes in 2014 might make some Yankees fans shudder when talking about a potential reunion, Weeks represents a change of pace that could be intriguing to GM Brian Cashman.
Weeks posted a .274/.357/.452 in 121 games for the Milwaukee Brewers last season - his tenth full campaign with the club. While his pop appears to have diminished (he hit just eight home runs in his age-31 season), he gets on base and still works the gaps effectively from the right side of the plate.
