Yankees Rumors Roundup: The Latest On Max Scherzer, Martin Prado, & More

The Yankees weren’t very active in the Winter Meetings, but after re-signing 3B Chase Headley, New York seems poised to make some more moves. Here are the latest Yankees rumblings as of Friday evening:

MAX SCHERZER

The Yankees had been pursuing Scherzer, as well as a number of other top free agent pitchers, this offseason, but they are no longer going after the former Cy Young winner, according to ESPN.

"The chances of us bringing in a guy for six [years] and $25 million or over in my opinion is virtually none,'' Yankees president Randy Levine said in the article. "At the end of the day you have to be realistic in any organization.''

MARTIN PRADO

New York traded Martin Prado to the Miami Marlins for pitcher Nathan Eovaldi. After the trade, it looks like the Yankes will let prospects Rob Refsnyder and Jose Pirela fight it out to be the team's starting second baseman. Eovaldi will try to find a spot in the rotation with Masahiro Tanaka, CC Sabathia, Michael Pineda, Chris Capuano and Ivan Nova. New York is including $6 million in the deal to help cover Prado's contract.

OTHER NOTES

The Yankees acquired pitcher Gonzalez German in a trade with the Mets after he was designated for assignment. German has 54 appearances out of the Mets’ bullpen over the past two years, recording a 4.31 ERA with 8.9 K/9 and 4.2 BB/9.

New York as also designated pitcher Preston Claiborne for assignment. He made 62 relief appearances for the Yankees over the last two years, recording a 3.79 ERA with 7.3 K/9 and 3.0 BB/9.
