The Yankees have been uncharacteristically quiet in their pursuit of free agent SP Max Scherzer. Despite several teams making public runs at the former Cy Young winner, the Yankees have been holding their cards close...but it sounds like Scherzer (and his agent Scott Boras) might be getting antsy.
According to WEEI.com's Rob Bradford, the Red Sox and their recent interest in Scherzer might all be an elaborate ploy...one designed to get the Yankees to ramp up their pursuit of Scherzer. New York will no doubt be one of the top bidders for any free agent pitcher, and having their financial muscle as a known quantity in the market would definitely get other teams to step their respective games up as well.
Jon Morosi of Fox Sports also believes the Yankees are still in on Scherzer, and Jon Heyman over at CBS agrees.
So, when can we expect to hear definitively if the Yankees are interested in Scherzer? With so many of the major pieces off the market, we'd expect things to ramp up in the next week, and we should know if the Yankees are ready to play ball with Scott Boras or not by the second week in January.
