The Yankees weren't thrilled to see David Robertson join the White Sox, but they're still chasing a number of high-profile targets that could ease the blow. Here are the latest Yankees rumblings as of Tuesday afternoon:
Chase Headley
The Astros have reportedly offered Headley a five-year, $65m deal, and the Braves are also in the hunt for the third baseman. Headley's main priority is long-term security, so he's unlikely to sign anything shorter than a four-year contract. Headley was believed to be closing in on a deal with the San Francisco Giants over the weekend, but their reluctance to offer him anything long-term torpedoed the move.
Jon Lester
The Yankees have emerged as a dark horse in the Lester sweepstakes, and a front office source from another team told ESPN's Jerry Crasnick not to count them out. The Cubs, Red Sox, Dodgers and Giants have all offered Lester deals in the six-year, $150m neighborhood, and there are league officials who believe the Yankees are the 'mystery team' offering seven years, $175m.
Before anyone gets too excited, CBS insider Jon Heyman - one of the more reliable insiders out there - doesn't think the Yankees are in the running, and they'd rather have Max Scherzer.
Max Scherzer
Scherzer remains a primary target for the Yankees, and they're the leading contender if he doesn't re-sign with Detroit (St. Louis has made a push, but they aren't believed to be as close as the Yankees). The Tigers are making a strong push to keep him around, though, and it looks like their effort is gaining momentum.
Jason Grilli
Charlie Wilmoth of MLBTradeRumors threw out Grilli's name as a possible short-term replacement for Robertson, and Grilli's agents are reportedly pushing hard to send him to New York. The 2013 All-Star had a rough 2014 and never fully bounced back, but he's only one year removed from a sensational 2013 campaign.
