The Yankees are continuing to stay active, with a number of free agent targets and potential deals on the table. With Winter Meetings in full swing, here's the latest chatter out of New York:
Omar Infante:
The second baseman is still leaning towards the Kansas City Royals, and their willingness to give him a four-year contract gives them the edge over the Yankees. Still, the Yankees are in play, and while they'd certainly offer a shorter contract, they're more likely to meet Infante's asking price (something over the $8M per season he earned last year).
Brandon Phillips:
Another second baseman, Phillips isn't a free agent, but the Cincinnati Reds are definitely listening to offers for him. The Yankees are believed to have made exploratory overtures to the Reds, but their interest in Phillips isn't believed to be serious just yet.
Justin Masterson:
Don't read too heavily into the Masterson rumors floating around - the Yankees aren't believed to be serious about landing the Indians pitcher. Buster Olney shot down the trade chatter earlier this morning, and we'd be shocked if it turned out he was wrong.
Johan Santana:
The Yankees, Twins, Rays, Mets, Orioles, Brewers, Royals and Pirates have all made inquiries about the left-handed pitcher. Santana is planning to put on a showcase in January to show teams what he can still do (he sat out two of the last three seasons with injury), and he isn't expected to make a decision unless a team comes forward with a knockout offer before then.
Joaquin Benoit
The Yankees are taking a hard look at Benoit in view of improving their bullpen. We don't think a signing is imminent, but keep an eye on Benoit anyway.
