With the re-signing of third baseman Chase Headley to a four-year deal and the acquisition of slugger Garrett Jones via a trade with the Miami Marlins, the New York Yankees appear to have relegated Alex Rodriguez to a limited DH role to start the 2015 MLB season.
Per Forbes' David Lariviere, this could lead the Yankees to cutting ties with A-Rod in 2015 while eating the remainder of his contract:
It’s almost as if they are giving him a good-faith gesture in allowing him an opportunity to show he can still hit after a year-long suspension for PEDs. However, if he’s hitting .220 with a homer and 10 RBI in the middle of May, the real plan is to hand him his walking papers by Memorial Day and eat the remaining $60 million or so on his contract which runs through 2017. The surest bet in sports right now is that A-Rod will never play through the rest of that pact.
Joe Girardi appears to be Rodriguez's only true ally left in the New York Yankees organization, leading many to believe that GM Brian Cashman (who has had his problems with A-Rod) will have a quick trigger when it comes to releasing the maligned veteran hitter.
