The New York Yankees and general manager Brian Cashman have been judicious in their dealings so far this offseason, maintaining their cache of top prospects while resisting the urge to overpay starting pitchers that could present diminishing returns down the road.
While Bill Madden of the New York Daily News commends the Yankees for this, he believes the team will have to "resort to the trade route" to find a viable starting pitching option, due to the free-agent market having been "pretty much stripped clean to the low risk/high upside types like oft-injured lefty Brett Anderson."
The Yankees will likely keep prospects such as dominant righty Luis Severino and left-handed first baseman Greg Bird off the trade blocks, looking to their more middle-value prospects in order to build a trade package for starting pitching.
Who the Yankees would plan to target in such a scenario is still up for interpretation.
