Despite a bevy of Yankees rumors to the contrary this offseason, the New York Yankees may not be looking at free agent infielder Asdrubal Cabrera as an option at second base.
So says MLB.com's Bryan Hoch:
Hearing the Yankees are not in on Asdrubal Cabrera; spring 2B battle would involve Rob Refsnyder, Jose Pirela, Nick Noonan & Cole Figueroa.
— Bryan Hoch (@BryanHoch) December 23, 2014
All four of the names listed above are unproven commodities, mixing both prospects (Refsnyder and Pirela) and minor-league signees (Noonan and Figueroa).
This is likely not an indictment of what the Yankees see (or don't see) in the veteran Cabrera. Despite Cabrera's struggles at the plate in his time spent between the Cleveland Indians and Washington Nationals in 2014, he's still young enough (29) to put the pieces back together at the dish.
Rather, this may just be GM Brian Cashman seeing exactly what he has in-house for second base options before investing even more money on the free-agent market.
