The New York Yankees have yet to make a giant splash in the free-agent market this offseason, but it's possible they could be saving their energies for a run at former Kansas City Royals ace James Shields.
Per Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe, "the final Shields numbers are expected to be close to the five years and $110 million remaining (if the option is picked up) on the Cole Hamels deal, according to one major league source who was privy to Shields’s demands. The Giants and Red Sox are in the picture, and the Yankees may be another suitor."
If Cafardo's salary projections prove correct, the deep-pocked Yankees will be one of just a few teams with a legitimate shot at Shields. While the team's interest in the veteran righty might just be speculative at the present moment, his consistent product and ability to eat innings could make him a coveted asset for GM Brian Cashman.
Shields was 14-8 with the AL champion Kansas City Royals last season, pitching to a 3.21 ERA with a K/BB ratio over 4 and a 1.18 WHIP.
