The New York Yankees have put pitcher Chase Whitley on the disabled list with a sprained right elbow and fear he may need Tommy John surgery.
Whitley left in the second inning of Thursday night's loss to the Tampa Bay Rays with right elbow pain. He underwent an MRI exam and other tests on Friday, prompting manager Joe Girardi to bring up the possibility of Tommy John surgery.
New York recalled right-hander Jose Ramirez from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to fill Whitley's roster spot.
Chris Capuano is expected to take Whitley's spot in the rotation, though he is coming back from a quad injury.
Whitley is 1-2 with a 4.19 ERA in four starts this season.
