He might not have the hype or the price tag of Cuban super prospect Yoan Moncada, but Hector Olivera is still a prime target for the Yankees this offseason.
The Cuban 2B had a private workout with the team last month, and they're one of several MLB clubs eagerly awaiting an update on his free agent status.
Olivera petitioned the league for free agency over two weeks ago now, but is yet to hear back (via MLB.com's Jesse Sanchez). He's holding regular showcases for teams and has no shortage of interest (the Padres, Giants, Mariners, Braves and Oakland A's are reportedly keeping an eye on his situation), but no team can make a move until the league clears him to become a free agent.
The Yankees haven't been in play for many of the Winter's big-name free agents, and Brian Cashman's new money- and age-conscious approach has seen the team scale back their usual spending spree considerably. Olivera is a player who fills a need (although not a glaring one), and his price tag should be well within the Yankees' updated range. Until MLB makes a ruling on his free agent status, though, the Yankees will have to remain patient.
