Veteran middle infielder Stephen Drew has hit a measly .157 in 153 at-bats for the New York Yankees this year, leading the New York Yankees to turn to minor-league lifer Jose Pirela in his stead for two straight games at second.
According to Brendan Kuty of NJ.com, that could be the case for awhile yet.
So, likely tired of Drew's bat and weary of defending it, the team has turned to Pirela — at least for now.
Pirela hasn't been much better than Drew this season, hitting .212 with no homers or RBI in 33 at-bats, but he had a hot spring and owns a .274 career minor league batting average. Pirela missed the first month of the season with a concussion he suffered near spring training's end.
Apparently the Yankees are banking on Pirela showing some promise, sitting the lefty-hitting Drew two days in a two against right-handed pitching. Pirelas bats righty.
"I'm here, man, and everybody here has a chance to play," Pirela told NJ Advance Media. "So I just thank the Yankees for giving me the opportunity to get one here. It's a big chance right now so I've been working hard for when the opportunity comes and I can go forward."
