In a perfect world, Stephen Drew would win the second base job outright for the New York Yankees and top prospect Rob Refsnyder would be given another year to season himself before taking the stage as a regular second baseman at the big league level.
However, with the question marks surrounding Drew and his troubling offensive production last season, GM Brian Cashman says he'll have a chance to win his way onto the roster out of spring training.
"The bottom line is, he'll go into camp, and he'll compete, and he'll have a chance to potentially earn a spot on the roster," Cashman said.
He would also add that Refsnyder "has a chance to be a regular offensive second baseman."
Many Yankees fans were calling for him to take over 2nd base last year over a struggling Brian Roberts, and Refsnyder's torrid pace at Double-A and Triple-A only intensified the noise.
For Cashman, he believes that Refsnyder will "benefit from a little more" work defensively at second base, but he's not willing to rule out that Refsnyder is MLB ready right now.
