Manny Banuelos was once the nation's fourth-best prospect and the unquestioned heir to the top of the New York Yankees' starting rotation. After the Yankees traded Banuelos to the Atlanta Braves on Friday for David Carpenter and reliever Chasen Shreve, things have officially changed.
Here's ESPN New York's Wallace Matthews on what went wrong for the young Banuelos in the Yankees' farm system:
Tough to say exactly. It would be easy to trace Banuelos' problems to the Tommy John surgery, but an organizational source refused to give Banuelos that out when I spoke with him Thursday night. "Last year, his stuff just wasn't as good," the source said. "He's had control problems and he's only been able to throw 100 innings in the past three years."
In 73 career Triple-A innings, Banuelos walked 39 batters for a red-flag waving average of nearly five walks a game. Seeing that he's only really had one truly dominant season for the Yankees' organization (2009 at Class-A), Banuelos' control problems made him expendable as New York GM Brian Cashman looks forward to 2015 and beyond.
