The New York Yankees have added yet another pitcher to their minor league Spring Training mix, signing former UConn Huskies standout Anthony Marzi on Saturday to a deal with an invitation to Spring Training.
Marzi went undrafted despite a solid run that helped the Huskies to the NCAA tournament in 2013, so he's elated to have a chance to prove himself with a storied franchise like the Yankees.
"I couldn't be happier with the way things worked out, and the organization I'm getting a chance with," said Marzi, via Dom Amore of the Hartford Courant. "I've been a Yankees fan all my life. My whole family are Yankees fans, and they're seriously pumped up."
One of the Yankees' top scouts, Cesar Presbott, was impressed with Marzi's velocity (89-90 mph) and four-pitch arsenal when Marzi joined 40 other players at a Port Chester, NY workout in January. He will battle for a spot on one of the team's Class-A affiliates with camp opens in the next couple of weeks.
