The odd relationship between New York Yankees management and oft-maligned slugger Alex Rodriguez has taken yet another twist, with the Yankees reportedly planning to ignore any future home run milestones that A-Rod reaches during the 2015 MLB season.
A-Rod hit his 655th career home run against the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday, placing him just five home runs behind Hall-of-Famer Willie Mays (660) for fourth on the all-time home run list.
Yet, per FOX Sports, "a Daily News source reports the Bombers plan to not acknowledge this "milestone," or any other bonus triggered should Rodriguez reach Barry Bonds (762), Hank Aaron (755), Babe Ruth (714) and Mays' marks."
Not only will the Yankees not celebrate any potential milestones, they're expected to fight tooth and nail against the automatic $6 million bonus in A-Rod's contract that will be triggered if/when he ties Mays.
"They say the records are tainted," that same source told the Daily News regarding the Yankees' thinking, "and therefore they're not milestones that can be marketed."
