The New York Yankees avoided arbitration with two of their newest players, David Carpenter and Nathan Eovaldi, the team announced on Saturday.
Per Jason Cohen of SB Nation, "starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi has agreed to a $3.3 million salary while reliever David Carpenter will be paid $1.3 million in 2015. MLB Trade Rumors projected them to earn $3.1 million and $1.1 million, respectively, so it seems the Yankees were feeling a little generous with their money."
This is both Carpenter and Eovaldi's first year of arbitration, so it's no surprise that the process didn't drag out. Carpenter was brought in from the Atlanta Braves to likely take over Shawn Kelley's role in the seventh inning, and the right-handed reliever likely only sits behind Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller on the team's bullpen depth chart.
Eovaldi was acquired from the Miami Marlins earlier this offseason and is arbitration-eligible through 2017. He's been inconsistent at the MLB level so far, but the Yankees hope working with Larry Rothschild will turn him into an effective middle-of-the-rotation guy.
