The New York Yankees have the largest fanbase in baseball, but one high-profile fan is going to have to keep his allegiance to himself for the next few years.
New MLB commissioner Rob Manfred grew up a fan of the Yankees, and he told the New York Times a bit about that in an article published yesterday:
Manfred, a labor lawyer, is at home on Park Avenue in Manhattan. Three of his four grown children live close by, and one attends Colgate. He saw his first game at Yankee Stadium, and Mickey Mantle hit two home runs.
“And then I was a big Bobby Murcer fan during the down years,” Manfred said, smiling. “The Jerry Kenney, Horace Clarke years.”
Manfred, 55, grew up in the Upstate NY city of Rome, New York. He went a little further in depth about his upbringing (and his Yankees fandom) in an interview with SI's Tom Verducci last summer:
I grew up a Yankees fan. I was born in upstate New York. Because of the proximity to Syracuse University, we were one of the first areas to have cable television. So we actually had access to both Met and Yankee games all while I was growing up. My dad is a huge Yankee fan to this day. My mom and dad brought my brother and my sister and I down to Yankee Stadium to see our first game in 1968. Really, a great family experience. I mean, something all of us have very fond memories about.
