Yankees News: Michael Pineda has another "solid" Spring Training performance

Yankees news and rumors have been preoccupied with the battle for the fifth spot in the starting rotation, and it looks like one of the NY Yankees young arms is starting to separate himself in the competition.

Michael Pineda had another solid outing in today's start at Steinbrenner Field against the Baltimore Orioles. He leaves after 2 2/3 innings, throwing 48 pitches.

ESPN New York senior writer Andrew Marchand presents a more detailed view of the day for the New York Yankees' 25-year old righthander--

In today's game, Pineda scattered three hits and walked one to go along with his five strikeouts. His fastball was a consistent asset, and showed the pop which made him a coveted asset for the Yankees when they traded catcher Jesus Montero to the Seattle Mariners for him back in 2012.

Pineda's fastball has hovered in the 90-93 mph all Spring Training long, and his lack of bullpen experience coupled with his stuff could make him the favorite for the final spot in the NY Yankees' starting rotation.

At the current moment, righthander David Phelps has been rumored to be the other front-runner for the fifth spot.

We'll keep you posted as the competition progresses at the Yankees' Spring Training complex in Tampa, FL.
