New York Yankees veteran slugger Alex Rodriguez took over sole possession of fourth place on the all-time career home run list on Thursday, rocketing #661 into the stands in front of a mostly appreciative Yankee Stadium crowd.
While A-Rods' passing of Mays and upcoming march to 3,000 hits are likely to be only begrudgingly acknowledge by the organization as a whole due to A-Rod's much-publicized dalliance with PEDs, manager Joe Girardi isn't inserting himself into that conversation in any way.
"This is going to be debated for years to come, I'm sure," Girardi said of Rodriguez's brush with history, via NJ.com. "My job as a manager is to get the most out of my players. My job is not to decide if something is a milestone."
When asked about the importance of A-Rod's upcoming race to 3,000, Girardi once again deferred.
"I mean, that's for baseball people and historians to do," Girardi said. "My hope is he gets it fairly quickly, and those hits keep coming and the home runs keep coming and he's still productive."
