If there's one thing you can say about Hiroki Kuroda's decision to leave the New York Yankees to play once again in his native Japan, it sure wasn't about the money.
Per information obtained from a Japan Times report by NJ.com's Brendan Kuty, "Kuroda signed with Nippon Professional Baseball’s Hiroshima Carp for 400 million yen. That converts to about $3.17 million. The deal also contains performance bonuses, the report said, though it didn’t detail them."
In comparison, Kuroda's lowest MLB salary came in 2008 when the Los Angeles Dodgers paid him $7.4 million. Overall, the 39-year-old starter made $88 million over his seven-season Major League Baseball career, including a career-high $16 million with the Yankees in 2014.
While Kuroda would likely have had to take a pay cut in order to return to the Bronx in 2015, it wouldn't have been a near-80% drop like he's taking to return to Japan.
