New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman spent Thursday night outside in the West 41st Street courtyard of Covenant House, joining an annual nationwide event to raise money for homeless children and adolescents.
This is the fifth year that Cashman has taken part in the event.
"I don't know how any human beings can deal with this on a daily, weekly, monthly basis," Cashman said, via Wallace Matthews of ESPN New York. "There's no comfort on that ground. Even one night is terrible. With all the elements, with nature. It’s not right. No one should have to live like that."
While Cashman spent the whole night out in the cold, he did bring a little help to get through the night.
"The first year, I didn't get a wink of sleep," he said. "But after Year 1, I brought a sleeping pill with me. I don't know if that's cheating or not."
Despite all the good his pledge will do, he knew exactly what Friday morning was going to bring at the office.
"I'll be a cranky Yankee tomorrow," he said with a bit of a smile.
