The New York Yankees seem poised to make some legitimate noise both on the free agent and trade markets this offseason, with Texas Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus reportedly one of the targets they are likely to consider.
However, in order to land Andrus, the Yankees will have to commit $120 million to the 26-year-old (unless the Rangers eat some of the cash, which is unlikely) through 2023, along with giving up some major trade chips in return.
Adding in the fact that Andrus reportedly came into the 2014 MLB season overweight and has a career OPS 137 points lower than that of Derek Jeter, and Andrew Marchand of ESPN New York remarks that it would take a special kind of insanity for the Yankees to pull the trigger on a trade:
Are you crazy? The Yankees would have to be in order to take on this deal. To acquire Andrus, they would have to trade some big-time prospects and then hope Andrus can become an All-Star again. That is a pretty big gamble, and it would come down to the Yankees believing that Andrus is better than what he has shown.
The Yankees have taken such gambles in the past, however, so don't be surprised if trade talks do indeed take place.
