New York Yankees shortstop Didi Gregorius sprained his left wrist in Saturday's Spring Training game against the Baltimore Orioles. Thankfully, however, X-rays showed no structural damage after Gregorius was sent to a nearby hospital for evaluation.
Gregorius hurt his wrist diving for a ball in the second inning. He would stay through the fourth inning before being sent to the hospital.
Yankees manager Joe Girardi said he was worried the very moment Gregorius dove and extended for the ball.
"Whenever a guy dives for the ball I hold my breath," the manager said.
Gregorius, speaking with reporters, said he was worried himself after completing the dive.
I would say yes," he said. "I rolled a lot -- if you see the video, I was almost rolled completely over, and I had to roll with it otherwise I think it would have completely snapped or something. It was fine after that."
Gregorius added that he's pretty sure the injury won't impact his status for Opening Day on April 6th.
"It actually feels good," Gregorius said. "So however days they tell me I need, I will take that."
Brendan Ryan will take over for Gregorius at short for the time being, per Joe Girardi.
