Yankees news got a much-needed shot in the arm on Thursday, as the New York Yankees defeated the Houston Astros 4-2 at Minute Maid Park -- salvaging a game against a team which lost 111 games just a year ago.
One of the biggest bright spots to come out of Thursday's victory was captain Derek Jeter's RBI single with two outs in the fifth innings, scoring Yangervis Solarte. It was the first RBI for Jeter on the campaign, and in addition to that, sets up the 20-year veteran for another piece of history.
Jeter's single was the 3,318th of his career, placing him just one shy of Hall-of-Famer Paul Molitor for 8th on the all-time Major League Baseball hits list.
The Yankees very-own future Hall-of-Famer went just 2-for-9 on the series, but seemed energized by Solarte's hustle-double which placed him in scoring position ahead of Jeter's big hit.
It is likely that, with good health, Derek Jeter could pass Molitor, Honus Wagner (3,415), and Carl Yastrzemski (3,419) to take over 6th on the all-time list by season's end. If Jeter can turn back the clock and post 199 hits or more, he would also pass Tris Speaker (3,514) for 5th all-time.
