The New York Yankees didn't celebrate (as expected) Alex Rodriguez's 660th home run on Friday night, with sources close to the team indicating that his tie with Willie Mays on the all-time HR list is worthless following his 2014 PED suspension.
How much of that is connected to the $6 million marketing bonus written into his contract for every time he ties a name on his climb up the list is neither here nor there at this point. A-Rod's 660th home run has been hit, regardless of personal or financial feelings about it.
In addition to all of that, there's yet another A-Rod milestone which is coming down the turnpike as the season progresses.
Via Tyler Kepner of the New York Times:
Yes, the home runs. But Rodriguez is also closing in fast on 3,000 hits. Only 28 players have done that. Some of the grandest names in history never made it, often because they walked so much: Ruth, Bonds, Ted Williams, Rogers Hornsby. Rodriguez has just one season with 100 walks, but getting on base has never been much of a problem. His career on-base percentage was .384 going into Friday’s game.
If A-Rod reaches 3,000 this year, his .942 career would stand as the third-best for any player with 3,000 hits or more (behind Stan Musial [.976] and Ty Cobb [.945]).
