New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi is considering putting oft-maligned slugger Alex Rodriguez in the team's starting lineup for Tuesday's spring training opener against the Philadelphia Phillies.
"It's something I have to talk to him about," Girardi said on Saturday, via an Associated Press report. "See where he's at physically."
Girardi added that the decision will likely come on Monday when the team convenes at their spring training complex in Tampa Bay, Florida.
Rodriguez, who turns 40 in July, was suspended for the entire 2014 MLB season due to violations of baseball's drug agreement and labor contract.
Rodriguez has been seen taking ground balls at first base in camp, but Girardi gave no indication exactly what role he'd be looking for A-Rod to fill when the team opens its exhibition slate against the Philadelphia Phillies. Many believe that Rodriguez will eventually be relegated to platoon duty at DH, but it appears Girardi will give him a chance to have an extended role with the club going forward into the season.
