New York Yankees Rumors: Yankees begin negotiations with Cuban shortstop Aledmys Diaz

If you thought that the New York Yankees rumors surrounding high-priced free agents were done with, then you are not quite familiar with the 2014 New York Yankees.

According to the St. Louis Post Dispatch, the New York Yankees are one of several MLB teams making a play at coveted Cuban shortstop Aledmys Diaz--

"The San Francisco Giants, Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees, Atlanta Braves, Philadelphia Phillies and Seattle Mariners—teams far more comfortable in this arena (than the St. Louis Cardinals who are also interested)—also are engaged in talks."

Despite the fact that the New York Yankees are basically mentioned as an also-ran in the preceding quotation, the questions which the New York Yankees have on the left side of their infield going into the 2014 season--especially with the news that captain Derek Jeter will be retiring at season's end--mean that you should never count the New York Yankees out, even with the $471 million they have spent this offseason.

The New York Yankees' farm system is notably shallow when it comes to middle infielders, so adding a player with the raw tools and potential that Aledmys Diaz possesses could be a quick way of papering over an organizational weak spot.
