New York Yankees Rumors: Yankees Out, Padres In On Free Agent RHP James Shields?

The San Diego Padres have reportedly made a huge run at landing free agent righty James Shields over the past 24 hours despite a current "impasse" in negotiations, and that may be just fine with New York Yankees GM Brian Cashman.

According to Brendan Kuty of NJ.com, "General manager Brian Cashman said on WFAN Friday that while he's still open to improving the team's roster before spring training, "the heavy lifting, for right now, is over."'

If that's true, that means that the Yankees are all but out of the James Shields sweepstakes, and could be out on adding any and all available marquee names until after they assess their current roster on the field.

For Cashman, that suits him quite well at this juncture.

"And so we're anxious to get to spring training to see what we've got," he said. "I know we've tackled a lot of areas of need ... and we wanted to get younger, but we had a lot of areas to fill. We are pleased with how the winter has gone. We have guys with some risk and some upside and youth. So that creates a potpourri of things that could happen."
